A shorter version of Black Snakeroot, C. 'James Compton' is a great alternative if you don't have the room for a seven-foot monster. Very compact, with the same great, fragrant blooms of the Snakeroots. Lacy foliage emerges green, then matures to dark purple. Butterflies love the late summer, early fall blossoms. Somewhat more vigorous than Cimicifuga 'Hillside Black Beauty'.
