About Our Perennials

All of JPN's perennials are northern grown, which translates to improved hardiness for those of us gardening in less temperate climates (all are hardy to zone 5 and lower). We strive to produce the finest plants while keeping prices as low as possible. You'll find many of our perennials are priced at $8.95, and most are potted in 3qt. (i.e., trade gallon) pots. Some of the perennial links have as many as four photos, so be sure to visit them all. We have many other varieties available, so if there is something you don't see in our online catalog, please call - we either have it on hand, or perhaps we can procure it for you elsewhere. Happy planting!

Achillea 'Moonshine' (Yarrow)  18"  Z3-8  Sun

I would grow A. 'Moonshine' for itsAchillea 'Moonshine' ferny, silver foliage alone. An added bonus is its large, 3", phosphorescent-yellow blooms from June through July, which make the perfect landing pad for butterflies. Unlike other Achilleas which tend to run amok, A. 'Moonshine' forms a tidy clump. Although A. 'Moonshine' has been around awhile it's still immensely popular and deserves a spot in everyone's border. The silver foliage is a great foil for hotter solid reds and oranges like Crocosmia 'Lucifer'. Foliage has a nice aromatic, herby scent.   10.95

Agastache 'Blue Fortune' (Anise Hyssop)    36"  Z4-9  Sun-part shade

This is a plant I call an easy keeper Agastache Blue Fortunewith lots of impact. It has a tremendously long season of bloom (midsummer thru early fall) and is in no way particular about soil type (it doesn't even mind our clay). In one season a plant will grow to a compact 3-ft by 3-ft clump. Bees love the purple bottle-brush flowers that literally cover the plant. When crushed the leaves have a black licorice scent. It reminds me of Pervoskia without the woodiness. Great for the middle to the back of the border. Combines well with Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm', Achillea 'Moonshine', and shorter Asters. Easy!                                 10.95

Ajuga r. 'Black Scallop' PP15815 (Bugleweed)    3-6"  Z4-10   Sun-Shade

This newer Ajuga from PlantHaven®, Inc. is one of my personal favorites. Ajuga Black ScallopWith the glossiest, near-black leaves and interesting scalloped edges, what's not to love? Nice groundcover for shade and would work well paired with Mukdenia or as a contrast to the peachy leaves of Heuchera 'Caramel'. Deep blue flowers in spring attract both hummingbirds and butterflies. A must have.  9.95

Ajuga 'Catlin's Giant' (Bugleweed)    6"  Z3-10  Sun-shade

One of the bigger Ajugas 'Catlin's Giant' has 6-inch long, glossy, greenish-purple leaves.Ajuga Catlin's Giant Until established, this particular Ajuga is more of a clump-former, but after a few years you'll have a dense weed-smothering groundcover. Great for under trees where competition from roots and low light levels make growing anything (even weeds) a challenge. In spring as an added bonus flower-spikes of gentian blue appear. Nice large glossy leaves.   8.95

Amsonia hubrichtii (Arkansas Blue Star)   3ft   Z4-9  Sun-pt shade

This plant is native to the southern states in North America, but performs admirably in our Zone 4 climate. The light blue flowers resembling those of Agapanthus arrive here for us in early June. The Amsonia hubrichtiifoliage is almost feathery, a texture that is difficult to find in a hardy perennial. One of the main assets of this plant is its fabulous fall color - a bold yellow tinted chartreuse. Great in combination with Sedum 'Autumn Fire',grasses of medium height (Pennisetums, Miscanthus, etc.) or in front of a purple-leaved Cotinus. A great addition to fall designs. Please note that the Amsonias are noted for their late emergence in spring.   9.95

Amsonia tabernaemontana (Willow Blue Star)   30"  Z3-9  Sun-pt shade

Very similar to A hubrichtii above, but with strappier foliage.Amsonia tabernemontana A. tabernaemontana is slightly shorter and reportedly hardier than A. hubrichtii. Fantabulous fall color is again a main feature of this hardy staple. A. tabernaemontana isn't quite as billowy, but it also doesn't need staking.   8.95

Anemone hupehensis (Japanese Anemone)   30"  Z5-8  Sun-pt shade

The 3 in. pale-pink flowers of this Anemone are on tall scapes above neat compact green Anemone hupehensisfoliage. The blooms almost seem to dance in the wind. They're appearance comes at a welcome time in our garden - just after the summer lull and before the Chrysanthemums. My patch (which has multiplied enormously from three plants) does quite well in afternoon shade. A. hupehensis tends to break dormancy later in the spring.   8.95

Anemone sylvestris (Snowdrop Anemone)   12"  Z3-8  Sun-pt shade

The blooms of this Anemone are slightly smaller than A. hupehensis Anemone sylvestris and of the purest white. They bloom much earlier (early June for us) and spread by rhizomes, making them the perfect groundcover for partial shade. I have mine on a difficult north slope. Even when they're not in bloom they have a tidy, weed-smothering foliage.  8.95

Anthemis t.'Charme' PP15200 (Dwarf Golden Marguerite)   12"  Z3-9  Sun

New for 2009! This is the diminutive version of Anthemis Charme the larger Anthemis 'Kelwayi' which tends to be a bit rangy. A. 'Charme' was selected by Inspiration Plants for its compact habit. The golden daisy-like flowers begin in early summer and bloom profusely for several months. Nice color impact for the front of the border.  10.95

Armeria 'Bloodstone' (Sea Thrift)   8-10"  Z3-8  Sun-pt shade

This is just a darling little plant to use in front of the perennial border or along Armeria 'Bloodstone' a walkway. The flowers are a bright pink held atop nice evergreen grassy foliage, which will mature to a tidy dense clump. These bloom over a considerably long period starting in mid-spring, especially if kept deadheaded. The bright flowers appear on thin, leafless stalks. Plant 'Bloodstone' where you can enjoy its diminutive stature and colorful blooms.    8.95

Aruncus aethusifolius (Dwarf Goat's Beard)   10-12"  Z3-7  Sun-shade

This is a cute little Aruncus aethusifolius darling to nestle in amongst the hostas. Feathery white blooms appear in early to midsummer. The glossy foliage is quite attractive even when the plant isn't in bloom. The best surprise is its golden fall color. (1 quart)  8.95

Aruncus dioicus (Goat's Beard)   4-5ft  Z3-7  Sun-shade

What a versatile plant, growing equally well in sun as in shade. Aruncus dioicusThink of this as a giant white Astilbe. Its hearty constitution makes it a great replacement for a shrub in the perennial border. The flowers appear in mid-summer on long feathery panicles. Makes a nice specimen plant in the shade garden and a great accent in full sun as well. 1 1/2 gallon   9.95

Aruncus 'Misty Lace' PP15798 (Goat's Beard)   2-3ft  Z3-7  Sun-shade

For those who don't have quite Aruncus 'Misty Lace' enough room to accomodate the larger Aruncus dioicus, here's the perfect plant solution. Aruncus 'Misty Lace' only reaches 2-3 feet in height. All the drama of the larger species, in a more compact form. The stems of A. 'Misty Lace' also have incredible red color. Heat and humidity tolerant.   12.95

Aster dumosus 'Wood's Light Blue' (New York Aster)   12-16"  Z3-8  Sun

Due to its small stature this is a great aster to use as an edger. The plants are compact andAster Wood's Light Blue bursting with light blue blossoms beginning in late summer and continuing through mid-fall. Nice combined with grasses of medium height and any of the Sedums (especially Sedum sieboldii). Shows excellent resistance to mildew and rust.  9.95

Aster dumosus 'Wood's Purple' (New York Aster)   12-16"  Z3-8  Sun

Due to its small stature this is a great aster to use as an edger. The plants are compact andAster Wood's Purple bursting with semi-double purple blossoms beginning in late summer and continuing through mid-fall. Nice combined with grasses of medium height and any of the Sedums (especially Sedum sieboldii). Shows excellent resistance to mildew and rust.  9.95

Aster dumosus 'Wood's Pink' (New York Aster)   12-16"  Z3-8  Sun

Another shorter aster that's great for edging.Aster Wood's Pink In early fall, Aster 'Wood's Light Pink' is covered in light pink, semi-double flowers. I love the 'shock' of color it provides in the early fall landscape. Great planted en masse. Shows excellent resistance to mildew and rust.     9.95

Aster ericoides 'First Snow' (Heath Aster) 2ft  Z3-9  Sun

New for 2010! I've always wished Aster e. 'First Snow' we could grow Heaths and Heathers here in Jo Daviess County, but our alkaline clay soil doesn't seem to be to their liking (judging by the number I've killed). Finally a possible substitue, albeit with blooms in late summer and early fall. Prostrate, woody (almost shrub-like) plants are smothered in dainty white blossoms. Mildew resistant and drought tolerant once established.   10.95

Aster novae-angliae 'Alma Potschke' (New England Aster) 3ft  Z3-8  Sun

If you're looking for a great fall show, A. 'Alma Potschke' is for you. The bloomsAster Alma Potschke are of the hottest pink imaginable in a hardy perennial. I recommend a late spring shearing to keep the plants compact, although even then they still require staking. As showy as this plant is in bloom it's a small price to pay. One of the best companions to Boltonia.  9.95

Astilbe chinensis 'Vision in Pink' PP11860   (Chinese Astilbe) 18-20"  Z4-9  Pt-shade-Shade

This patented member of the 'Visions' series is a godsend to those who have never had luck with Astilbe 'Vision in Pink'Astilbe. This vigorous selection has multiple pink feathery blossoms in June that gradually fade to brown. For me this has been by far the easiest Astilbe to grow. It's not nearly as demanding as other Astilbe as far as water requirements.   12.95

Astilbe chinensis 'Vision in Red' PP11965 (Chinese Astilbe) 15" Z4-9  Pt.shade-Shade

Another patented member of the 'Visions' family - this Astilbe sports blooms of an interesting Astilbe Vision in Redred-purple. Slightly shorter than its pink sister, and although a great grower it's not quite as robust as 'Vision in Pink'. The leaves have beautiful red-veining throughout the summer.   12.95

Astilbe 'Ostrich Plume' (Tall Japanese Astilbe) 30"  Z4-9  Pt.shade-Shade

This is an unusual Astilbe, and the tallest that we offer. Rosy-pink, arching plumes are quiteAstilbe Ostrich Plume showy. As is typical of most Astilbe, 'Ostrich Plume' loves rich, moist soil in a partly shaded location. A fully mature specimen of 'Ostrich' is a sight to behold.  9.95

Astilbe 'White Gloria'   25-28"  Z4-9  Pt.shade-Shade

When given plenty of water, the flowers of A. 'White Gloria' are the purest white, and remind me Astilbe White Gloriaof puffy white clouds. The foliage is a dark green, which makes a nice contrast to the airy white blossoms. Blooms slightly earlier than the others.  9.95

Aurinia saxatilis Summit™ (Basket-of-Gold)  7-9"  Z3-7  Sun

I've always loved Aurinia, and have high hopes for 'Summit™'. The Aurinia 'Summit' vibrant yellow blossoms of Aurinia are such a welcome sight in early spring. 'Summit™' boasts of even earlier blooms on more compact uniform plants - none of the floppiness of the other Aurinias. The silver-grey foliage is attractive even when not in bloom. Great as a groundcover in sun, and even better if you have a rocky nook to tuck them in to. This is a seed strain, so I would assume it will resow like the other Aurinias.  8.95
