Acer saccharum 'Fall Fiesta®' (Fall Fiesta® Sugar Maple) Z3-7; Ht:50-75'; Spread:50' Full symmetrical branching with leathery, glossy deep green leaves. Resistant to leaf tatter and leafhopper damage. Fast growing nice shade tree. Also resistant to sun scald and frost cracks. Acer x freemanii (Autumn Blaze®) Maple Z4-7; Ht:50-60'; Spread:40' An incredibly popular hybrid of Silver Red Maple. Trees show lovely dense form even at a young age. Beautiful orange-red fall foilage. Seven to eight foot well-branched trees - 117.95
Betula nigra 'Summer Cascade' PP155105 (Summer Cascade River Birch) Z4-9 Ht:6-8'; Spread:6-8' This newer weeping form of the River Birch, makes a great small specimen tree or focal point for the landscape. If left to its own devices untrained, it will form a rounded weeping shrub. When staked, it forms an upright tree with beautiful weeping branches. Caragana arborescens 'Walker' (Walker Weeping Caragana) Z2-7 Ht:4'; Spread:5' This Caragana is budded on a 4 foot standard. Foliage is ferny and finely textured, with cute yellow pea-like flowers in spring. Flowers are followed by delicate little pea-like pods. Cercidiphyllum japonicum (Katsuratree) Z4-8; Ht:40-60'; Spread: 20-30' A lovely, interesting tree with blue-tinted leaves that resemble redbud foliage. Fall coloration is apricot-yellow. Cercis canadensis (MN strain Redbud) Z4-8; Ht:20-30'; Spread: 20-25' An incredibly popular spring-flowering tree. As trees age they develop a lovely horizontal spreading habit. Flowers are a bright pinkish-purple and make an incredible impression in the spring landscape. This strain is grown from seed collected at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Chionanthus virginicus (White Fringetree) Z4-9 Ht:12-20'; Spread:12-20' A great smaller native tree for use as a specimen. Cladrastis kentuckea (American Yellowwood) Z4-8; Ht:30-40'; Spread:30-40' A large American-native tree with spectacular creamy white flower panicles in spring. The 8-14" panicles are loaded with fragrant flowers. The bark of the Yellowwod is a smooth gray at maturity and resembles that of a beech. One of the best native trees for alkaline soils. Cornus alternifolia (Pagoda Dogwood - Tree Form) Z4-7; Ht:15-20'; Spread:20-25' A smaller tree with fantastic red fall coloration. Gymnocladus dioica (Kentucky Coffeetree) Z4-8; Ht:50-60'; Spread:40-50' Although their appearance as juveniles is somewhat ridiculous, a mature Kentucky coffeetree is a sight to behold. One of the best (and most underplanted) all around shade trees for the landscape. Foliage is a bluish-green, and the bark is deeply furrowed and interesting in winter. Mahogany seed pods. Heptacodium miconoides (Seven-Son Flower) Z4-8; Ht:10-20'; Spread:8-15' A woody plant that truly has four-season interest. Used as a large shrub or multi-stemmed tree. Glossy dark green foliage in spring and summer. Fragrant white flowers in August and September. The real show begins in October when the sepals turn a pinkish red. Liriodendron tulipfera (Tuliptree) Z4-9; Ht:70-90'; Spread:35-50' A gorgeous large tree for those who have the space. The Tuliptree has a unique mitten-like leaf, which is unmistakable.
